As a recent college graduate those were the two big items on my wish list. I was looking for a new sense of purpose and a community I could devote myself to. I had discovered Habitat for Humanity years before and spent hours, days, even whole weeks working alongside other volunteers on Habitat build sites across the country. It was with the memory of that shared camaraderie that I set out looking for an open position at one of the hundreds of Habitat for Humanity affiliates. My greatest find came through the AmeriCorps National program, a long term service opportunity. Through the AmeriCorps I was able to gain a year long position at Central Berkshire Habitat assisting families, volunteers, and staff. A whole new avenue of opportunities opened up to me and I have cherished every moment of my service. Whether I was behind a computer, at a conference table, or on a build site I had the chance to meet extraordinary people and I was able to lend a hand in achieving extraordinary change. My thanks to this wonderful, purposeful Berkshire community that took me in and made me one of their own.
